on Magic

Have heroes outside of magic.  Mine are Hitchcock, Poe, Sophocles, Shakespeare, and Bach.  You’re welcome to borrow them, but you must learn to love them yourself for your own reasons.  Then they’ll push you in the right direction…

Love something besides magic, in the arts.  Get inspired by a particular poet, film-maker, sculptor, composer.  You will never be the first Brian Allen Brushwood of magic if you want to be Penn & Teller.  But if you want to be, say, the Salvador Dali of magic, we’ll THERE’S an opening.

a future present

Stand still. The trees ahead and bushes beside you are not lost. Wherever you are is called Here, and you must treat it as a powerful stranger, must ask permission to know it and be known. The forest breathes. Listen. It answers, I have made this place around you, if you leave it you may come back again, saying Here. No two trees are the same to Raven. No two branches are the same to Wren. If what a tree or a bush does is lost on you, you are surely lost. Stand still. The forest knows where you are. You must let it find you.

By 30, you should have …

1. One old boyfriend you can imagine going back to and one who reminds you of how far you’ve come.

6. A past juicy enough that you’re looking forward to retelling it in your old age.

By 30, you should know …

11. What you would and wouldn’t do for money or love.

12. That nobody gets away with smoking, drinking, doing drugs, or not flossing for very long.

Los Angeles Weekend Recap

In west on 04/26/2012 at 11:00 am

Saw an insane amount of people in 2 full days. Before I surprised my father at dinner in Malibu, he apparently told my family “I’m glad Michelle’s not here because she really would have run up this bill” – then I walked in (and ordered oysters and king crab legs). Apart from family, I flew to LA to surprise Tatiana – my childhood best friend – at her baby shower. This is my first Auntie experience and I can’t wait.

Additional food highlights:

  • In-N-Out the moment I landed
  • MEXICAN FOOD!
  • Adventurous dinner at Animal where Rich, Julia, and I tried: bone marrow, pigs ears, octopus, quail, and shrimp and rabbit sausage

Almost missed both flights, coming and going, and arrived home in NYC at 5:15am Monday morning and went to work.

Have I mentioned that I love LA?

The Waste Land

In east on 04/25/2012 at 11:08 am

April is the cruelest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.
Winter kept us warm, covering
Earth in forgetful snow, feeding
A little life with dried tubers.
Summer surprised us,

Ranch, Please

In west on 04/25/2012 at 12:25 am

in college, when i lived off Riverside, the main strip of cheap university housing that everyone partied in, where i had 3 different roommates including a french girl for 3 weeks, the constant and favorite house guest was Deneice. we would smoke on the balcony in the winter, had weekly wednesday dinners with jacque and ashley. the one thing i always remember though is making Deneice turkey sandwiches, pepperchinis on the side, juice in hand. i loved making her those sandwiches, it was our thing to do.

it’s her birthday, and as always, i’m thinking about all those little things that make her such a big part of my life.

It is often said that New York is a city for only the very rich and the very poor. It is less often said that New York is also, at least for those of us who came there from somewhere else, a city for only the very young.  didion
