Kafka on the Shore

In west on 07/16/2012 at 11:36 pm

It’s hard to tell the difference between sea and sky, between voyager and sea. Between reality and the workings of the heart.

That’s how stories happen — with a turning point, an unexpected twist. There’s only one kind of happiness, but misfortune comes in all shapes and sizes. It’s like Tolstoy said. Happiness is an allegory, unhappiness a story.

The pillow smells like the sunlight, a precious smell.

SUMMA FRIDAYZ

In west on 07/13/2012 at 1:55 pm

NYC does this magical thing called Summer Friday’s.  Meaning I get to take a half day on 5 Friday’s of my choosing.

Leaving my office in 6 minutes to hurry back to Brooklyn to see Melanie!  She’s here for 1.5 days and I need to maximize my time with her!

Full house this weekend: Mel and Zak, Nicole’s cousin, and the lovely, Duncan the dog.

for Ms. Ephron; in Memoriam

In west on 06/26/2012 at 10:41 pm

Nora Ephron, writer and filmmaker, died today. As a huge fan of her work — Sleepless in Seattle, When Harry Met Sally, Julie & Julia and editor-at-large of the Huffington Post — this is terribly sad.  She always seemed like a fine, fine woman.

“Whatever you choose, however many roads you travel, I hope that you choose not to be a lady,” Ephron told Wellesley’s Class of 1996 in a commencement speech. “I hope you will find some way to break the rules and make a little trouble out there. And I also hope that you will choose to make some of that trouble on behalf of women.”

Ms. Ephron’s collection “I Remember Nothing” concludes with two lists, one of things she says she won’t miss and one of things she will. Among the “won’t miss” items are dry skin, Clarence Thomas, the sound of the vacuum cleaner, and panels on “Women in Film.” The other list, of the things she will miss, begins with “my kids” and “Nick” and ends this way:

“Taking a bath

Coming over the bridge to Manhattan

Pie.”
